My plated stained glass cactus window just saw first light. I feel like I’ve just filled up my toolbox with new techniques and skills to use on my next windows. I learned it’s a lot harder to make two windows duplicating solder lines exactly than to just construct 2 separate windows. I also learned not to tilt your panels and drip a large long blob of solder between your glass layers. Solder fishing expedition anyone? Yes, watch how Milly does it and learn. I’m astounded by the magical dimensions created by plating.

Ok. I didn’t follow the pattern in the Plating Magic class, but I applied each of the principles of the class to the project I was dedicated to at the time of the class.
I found that I could add depth of color, texture, perspective and enhance the view of my design with the plating magic cues. As an aside, my soldering has greatly improved with taking the focus off that and onto the overall design.

As with ALL of Milly’s classes, Plating Magic is great! She is a natural teacher, breaking things down step by step, with a few tips here and there that apply to all other glass work. I learned how to do glass with her beginners class two years ago and keep growing with each new class she offers. Plating is easy – if you take heed to apply Milly’s caveats and techniques – and the outcomes can be magical. It opens up palates and perspectives that would be impossible to achieve without layering the glass. A whole new dimension with a brilliant teacher. I did enjoy learning about plating and will consider using it in future projects. Part of my challenge is access to glass supply, as in variety. We live on a small island in the Salish sea off Victoria BC.
A question; would you ever consider plating only parts of a panel rather than the whole thing ?

I’m glad you were inspired Dana. Yes, I absolutely would plate only part of a panel. It’s called ‘Spot Plating’ and there’s a whole lesson on it in Module 6 Step 1.
I understand about the glass selection but always find with plating that you can adapt the glass that you have (for example by using the ‘no-kit’ sandblasting technique shown in the class).
Yes, copper foil overlays are covered in the course – Module 4 Step 1. It’s how the smaller cacti are made.

I took this course because I was curious to know. I state that my hobby is glass for several years and I was already applying glass to glass, but it was another thing. I must admit that a world has opened up to me with this technique very well explained by Milly. the course is complete with everything down to the smallest detail. Apart from the curiosity, it made me decide to attend it, the fact that I had all the time to follow it and look at it , when and how I wanted . Thanks again and again Milly and compliment for how you also succeed to make all of us look at a window as if it was a painting

At the very, very, very least, out of sheer necessity, my cutting skills have been sharpened like never before – nice bonus! That was exactly what I was hoping the Plating Magic course would deliver Karen – inspiration and pushing your glass forward. Happy am I to read that it has done this for you 🙂 Thank you.
Loved it and am hooked. My appreciation for what can be done with shading, color and texture has grown tremendously. I feel as if I was transformed from living in a 2D world to a 3D one! So excited,I started my next plated piece before I finished the course. Course materials are easy/handy to look back on for reference. Without exaggerating ,it now takes me 3 times longer to get in and out of my glass supply shop. By layering glass your color/texture/opacity palate becomes virtually limitless. The teacher by the way is excellent. Organized, enthusiastic, humorous and available for questions. Chapeau Milly! The class mates also make this a wonderful experience. Seeing others work was interesting, educational and inspiring! I highly recommend this course. Especially if you are feeling stagnant with your craft or in need of “something new.”

I am SO glad I did not pass on this class! Milly – you are a great teacher! I have not had a chance to put the plating into practice and make the cactus panel yet, as I have a few commissioned pieces I’m currently working on. BUT you were already able to help me better my soldering techniques! I am now able to solder quickly and efficiently, and in half the time that I was! Thank you for that!!! I cannot WAIT to make the cactus panel! Also – thank you for showing mistakes and fixes! That is always beneficial, too!

The Plating Course has expanded my possibilities of creativity. After years of multiple classes and teachers I’m so glad I decided to take this course . It has helped me to grow . Milly is an excellent teacher who gives valuable personal feedback. You also gain access to a group of stained glass makers who are very supportive. After showing my finished plated panel to some of my teachers and SG friends they were inspired by this technique too. I could say so much more but doing is a better way to explain and learn.
That’s interesting to know Deborah, that your ‘in person’ teachers and peers were inspired too. Plating really does add something new to stained glass and in doing so captures the imagination.

This course was incredible. It was easy to follow, full of useful practical information and really fun! I learned how to plate a panel, and now I understand how layering color can completely change the feel of a piece. For example, just by layering a blue sky with streaky white glass, the mood of the scene changes from bright sunny day, to stormy brooding sky. So cool. My favorite part was being able to add depth to a landscape just by layering. It makes it more realistic.
I also learned how to paint on glass and how to do an easy sandblasting effect to glass. I can’t wait to try some of these techniques on my next project.

I didn’t know anything about plating before I took Milly’s Class. She explained it all in detail that was easy to follow and execute. I like the ability to go at my own pace, viewing videos, then collecting supplies and choosing glass, then coming back to videos when my schedule allowed. The project was small enough to try out the plating but big enough to actually see how it works. I would recommend this class to others who want to challenge themselves to try something new.

When I saw that the Plating Magic class was offered, I was excited and eager to take it as I already had a glass piece in mind that I knew would be much enhanced by this technique. Milly does a wonderful job of teaching the steps – both what to do and what not to do. I watched all of the videos and downloaded her helpful lists of materials and patterns, and although I have not yet started my piece because I am working on another project, I will be able to return to her instructions and videos for refreshers for each step. I am not a beginner but not very skilled either, and I learned so much from this class about Plating and also general stained glass technique. Milly is a wonderful teacher, and I recommend this class wholeheartedly.

This course is simple enough to succeed in, and challenging enough to stretch you. Milly teaches not only about sandwiching layers, but includes direction on texture and shading and going a step beyond, into ‘THE NEXT DIMENSION.’ She also eats some humble pie and gave a needed lesson on undoing mistakes!
I’ve grown to LOVE Humble Pie Nita, it’s one of my favourite recipes LOL! What a lovely phrase for me to hear; ‘simple to do, yet challenging enough to stretch you’. That’s exactly what teacher-me wants for my courses so I’m very glad you found it to be so.

The plating course by Ms Milly is an eye opener for anyone that loves working with glass. The added depth and colors created using this technique is magical. I learned so many new techniques in this class….choosing glass & cutting foil overlays to create shadows, distance & bring the vision in my mind into the panel. I enjoyed the process so much I have completed a second pelican panel using Plating!

This course opened up an entire new realm of stained glass to me. Now when I look at a design or a picture I want to replicate I start thinking in layers and combinations of glass to achieve a particular effect. Whereas before I felt sometimes limited by the glass I might have available I now know how to combine glass in two or even three levels if needed. This class is a perfect compliment to the design course as one teaches you how to design those feelings of distance and depth and the other how to turn that design into reality through your glass choices and combinations. Bravo Milly. You continue to challenge us to take this art form to new levels!
I love to think that you are now looking at designs differently, with special effects in mind that you can now achieve with plating.
